Mental arithmetic is trainable — the evidence is just the score

Most people assume their mental maths is fixed: you are either a numbers person or you are not. It is more like a physical skill than a trait. The reason it rarely improves is that almost nobody practises it in a way that produces measurable feedback, so improvement is invisible and practice stops.

Why timing changes the exercise

Untimed arithmetic is calculation. You can always get there by working through the steps. Timed arithmetic forces something different — you start reaching for shortcuts, because the long route no longer fits.

Why variety matters

Practising one kind of problem produces one kind of improvement, and it plateaus quickly. Rotating between different shapes of problem keeps the work general — the point is faster arithmetic, not a personal best on one specific drill.

Making improvement visible

The main reason people quit is that they cannot tell whether it is working. A score you can compare to last week solves that, and it is most of what keeps a practice habit alive. Ten minutes with a score beats an hour without one.

Progress in mental arithmetic is not linear. Expect a fast start, a plateau, then a step up when a new shortcut becomes automatic.
